Cross River and Polygon show up for Nepal as True Friends

New York – Cross River – a regulated US bank, has partnered with Polygon- one of the world’s largest blockchain networks to open a donation corridor that takes cryptocurrency, converts it to dollars on American soil and delivers fiat into the Government of Nepal’s Prime Minister Disaster Relief Fund through recognized banking channels.

The design is deliberate. Nepal prohibits cryptocurrency, and the corridor does not test that. No digital asset enters the country, no Nepali institution touches a token, and the funds arrive the same way any foreign contribution would – as fiat, through the government’s own channels. The innovation is not in bending Nepal’s rules but in on-chain operations on the American side, so a sovereign government can accept global money without compromising its law.

Credit is also due in Kathmandu. Prime Minister Balen Shah’s government, in office since March on a mandate for reform and openness, was willing to receive funds through a structure no Nepali administration had seen before. A more cautious government could have declined to engage; this one recognized that the money was clean, the channel was compliant, and its citizens needed it now.

Nothing quite like it has existed before. Crypto relief campaigns typically stall at exactly this point – a government that cannot legally receive the funds. Placing a regulated US bank as the off-ramp resolves the problem in one step, and it was assembled within days of the floods that devastated districts across Nepal this week.

Nepal has learned, more than once, which friendships are declared and which are demonstrated. A regulated American bank and a global blockchain network did not wait to be asked, did not wait for the rules to change, and did not wait for the world to notice. They built something that had never existed because people of Nepal needed it – and that is how, in hard times, a nation finds out who its friends are.
