NRNA Moves Toward Unity: A Historic Step After Years of Division

For years, the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA), the global platform connecting Nepalis living abroad, has been facing internal struggles. Disagreements over leadership, elections, and governance led to division, parallel groups, and uncertainty. These disputes didn’t just affect the organization—they affected the lives of millions of Nepalis across the world who look to NRNA as a source of connection, service, and a way to contribute to their homeland.
The split began after the 10th International General Assembly (IGA). Since then, NRNA has been divided between factions led by Dr. Badri KC and Mahesh Shrestha, each running parallel activities. While both groups continued valuable humanitarian work, the organization’s full potential as a unified voice for Nepalis abroad remained untapped.
At its heart, NRNA’s mission is simple but powerful: to unite Nepalis worldwide, protect their rights, promote development in Nepal, preserve Nepali culture, and act as a bridge between Nepal and its diaspora. But for years, these goals were hampered by internal division.
Now, there is reason for hope. After months of dialogue, mediation, and patient negotiation, a grand unity agreement is scheduled to be signed this Sunday, 30 November, at the Office of the Prime Minister, Singha Durbar, in the presence of Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sushila Karki. The historic agreement will be signed by Dr. Badri KC and Mahesh Shrestha, bringing together the divided factions under one legitimate, democratic structure.

This is more than a formal event. It’s a moment of reconciliation—a chance for NRNA to heal, restore trust, and work together for the global Nepali community. NRNs around the world are expected to join, both physically and virtually, to witness this turning point.
As part of the unification, an 11-member Steering Committee will be formed to oversee the 12th International General Convention of NRNA, scheduled for February. Dr. Badri KC and Mahesh Shrestha will jointly coordinate the committee. Importantly, Steering Committee members will not be eligible to contest the convention elections, ensuring fairness and neutrality.
Membership registration for the convention will be opened for a month through the Member Register System (MRS), replacing the old MIS system. This step will also strengthen unity at the level of National Coordination Councils around the world.
For the first time in years, NRNA has the opportunity to function as a single, strong voice—supporting investment, disaster relief, cultural promotion, and national development. This unity is not just about organizational structure; it’s about people coming together, prioritizing shared goals, and embracing the power of collective vision.

Mr. Som Nath Sapkota
For Nepalis everywhere, this Sunday is a moment to celebrate hope, dialogue, and the belief that even the deepest divisions can be overcome with patience, compromise, and collaboration.
