Together for Nepal: Time for NRNA to Unite

नेपाली लिङ्क सेप्टेम्बर १७, २०२५

Mr. Som Nath Sapkota

The Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) is not just an organisation; it is a family of Nepalis scattered across the world, yet bound together by love for our motherland. No matter how far we travel or how much we achieve, Nepal lives within us—in our culture, our language, and our dreams. When NRNA was founded, it carried a simple but powerful vision: to unite all Nepalis living abroad so that distance would never weaken our bond with our homeland.

Over the years, this vision has guided us. NRNA has become a bridge, connecting the knowledge, resources, and goodwill of the diaspora with the needs of Nepal. We have invested in schools, hospitals, and businesses, encouraged innovation, and introduced fresh ideas to the country. The diaspora has proven time and again that its strength lies not only in remittances, but also in skills, technology, and creativity that, if harnessed wisely, can transform Nepal.

Our unity has shown its greatest strength in moments of crisis. When the devastating earthquake of 2015 struck, it was not only the ground beneath Nepal that shook—our hearts around the world trembled too. NRNA rose to the challenge, mobilising relief, rebuilding homes, and offering shelter to thousands. During the COVID-19 pandemic, once again, the diaspora stood with the nation, sending oxygen, medicines, and financial support, while also helping stranded Nepalis abroad. These moments remind us of what we can achieve when we act as one family.

But we must also be honest with ourselves. Alongside these achievements, there have been painful challenges. Internal disputes, fuelled by ego and personal ambition, have divided us. Political legacies from Nepal have seeped into our diaspora community, dragging us into the same divisions we once left behind. At times, the focus of NRNA has shifted from service to competition, from unity to factionalism. This has harmed us all, because while we argued, the real work of nation-building suffered. These disputes are not merely organisational—they weaken the very spirit of unity that NRNA was created to uphold.

Now, as Nepal faces economic struggles, unemployment, and the urgent need for reconstruction, we cannot afford to remain divided. It is time to forget past egos, personal grievances, and political baggage. What matters is not what split us yesterday, but what can unite us today. The future of Nepal—and the credibility of NRNA—depends on our ability to rise above disputes and rediscover the power of togetherness.

As a fellow member of this family, I appeal from my heart to every brother and sister in NRNA: let us put aside our differences and move forward as one. Let us protect the rights of Nepalis abroad while also dedicating ourselves to the socio-economic development of Nepal. Our nation needs us now more than ever.

We may not all contribute in the same way, but every effort matters. Whether through skills, knowledge, ideas, or resources—together, our contributions can shape Nepal’s future. What matters most is that we act with one spirit and one purpose.

United we stand, divided we fall. Together we can. Unity is power. Let us rise above disputes, walk together in solidarity, and prove once again that though we live across the world, our hearts beat as one for Nepal. This is our time to unite and build the Nepal our motherland deserves.
