Prativa Nakshatra: Where Art, Culture & Literature Blend

London — Hundreds of people gathered in southeast London earlier this week to celebrate Nepali talent and culture at the Pratibha Nakshatra competition.  

The contest, held at St George’s Garrison Church in Woolwich, featured young participants showcasing their skills in Nepali music, dance, literature, painting, and other art forms.

Winners in the youth division received cash prizes of £700, £600, and £500 respectively, along with trophies and certificates. The children’s category winners were awarded £500, £400, and £300, also accompanied by trophies and certificates.

Two major attractions—Pratibha Village and the Nepali Expo—were highlights of the programme. Pratibha Village recreated a cultural atmosphere reminiscent of Nepal, with traditional cuisine, folk music, festival dances, and displays of ethnic attire and household items. 

The event also featured art exhibitions and book displays celebrating Nepali creativity. Meanwhile, the Nepali Expo promoted organic Nepali produce, clothing, traditional jewellery, and cultural outfits.

Speaking about the vision of the event, coordinator Rajendra Khas said:

“Our main goal is to promote and preserve the Nepali language, art, culture, and traditions while we are in the UK and pass on our heritage to the younger generation born abroad.”

He added: “Britain is a multicultural country, and being here also gives us the opportunity to showcase Nepal’s rich culture and heritage. Each year, participation and enthusiasm are growing, but there is still much more to be done.”

Launched in 2017, Pratibha Nakshatra is now being branded with the aim of expanding into a global franchise, Khas added.

The programme was attended by representatives of small and domestic industries, Nepali organisations active in the UK, respected community leaders, members of the Nepali diaspora, as well as representatives from other ethnic communities.
