SONEUK Hosts Insightful Talk on Urban Sustainability in Nepal



London – The Society of Nepalese Engineers in the UK (SONEUK) successfully held the ninth event in its Talk Programme series on Wednesday, 29 October 2025.
The talk, titled “Urban Sustainability in Nepal: Challenges and Prospects”, was presented by Er. Manoj Kapri. The session began with a warm welcome from the moderator, Er. Srijana Khadka.
Er. Kapri’s presentation provided an overview of the rapid growth of urbanisation in Nepal and the associated sustainability challenges. He discussed how inclusive and resilient urban development can be achieved, sharing practical examples of sustainability measures successfully adopted in other countries.
He also highlighted the strategies outlined in Nepal’s National Urban Development Strategy (NUDS) 2017 for creating smart and liveable cities. Er. Kapri concluded by emphasising the importance of supporting research, capacity building, and technical expertise to promote sustainable urban growth.
The question-and-answer session was highly interactive, with participants discussing contributing factors to the urban heat island effect in cities such as Kathmandu and Pokhara. Several effective measures for promoting sustainable urban growth were also proposed.
The session concluded with remarks from Dr. Rudra Paudel, Vice Chairperson of SONEUK, who reiterated the need for Nepal to adopt sustainable approaches to urban development and expressed gratitude to Er. Kapri for his insightful presentation.
