Matina Foundation Felicitates Folk Poet Rajbhai Jakami

London:The Matina Foundation, established in London for the promotion of Nepal Bhasa and Newah culture, felicitated folk poet Rajbhai Jakami.

The programme commenced with the Nepali National Anthem, presented by young Nova Shrestha.

Foundation Chairperson Rachana Shrestha then welcomed the poets and participants with a brief opening statement.
Poets Gyani Shobha Tuladhar and Shashi Mahaju recited their poems, while Gyani Shobha Tuladhar also presented a poem by Dr Shanta Bir Singh Tuladhar.

In addition, Nirmala Sthapit read Siddhi Charan Shrestha’s celebrated piece Okhaldhunga in Nepal Bhasa and recited her Nepal Bhasa translation of Dr Sangita Swechcha’s poem Eyes and Mind, originally written in Nepali.

The programme also featured Nepal Bhasa folk songs dedicated to eminent Newah personalities, visually screened for the audience. The highlight of the event was Mr Jakami’s own lively performance of Nepal Bhasa children’s rhymes, which captivated all present.

Guest of Honour Mahant Shrestha OBE felicitated the poet with a dhaka shawl and a shield inscribed with the title A Poet of the Heart. Chairperson Rachana Shrestha further honoured him with the title of Honorary Member of the Foundation.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks from Nirmala Sthapit, while proceedings were gracefully conducted by Foundation member Nilima Shrestha.
