SONEUK Hosts Engineering Research Competition to Promote Young Talent

London- The Society of Nepalese Engineers in the UK (SONEUK) organised a competition titled “SONEUK Engineering Research Work Presentation and Competition” on 24th May 2025 at Aldershot, England.
The session was moderated by SONEUK CPD Coordinator Dr Surya Nath Ghimire, with a panel of judges comprising Dr Hom Nath Dhakal, Dr Birendra Shrestha, and Dr Ramesh Marasini. The event featured research presentations from eight young engineers and was attended by over 30 professionals from the engineering community.
Each participant was allocated a 10-minute slot for their presentation, followed by 10 minutes of questions and answers.

The engineers presented on a range of topics, reflecting diverse and contemporary challenges in the field. Er. Aashish Timilsina spoke on the use of biochar to reduce carbon emissions, while Er. Bipin Upreti discussed telemetry services.

Er. Britam Rai presented on stakeholder engagement, and Er. Krishna Kandel explored the repair of damaged concrete using CFRP (carbon fibre reinforced polymer). Er. Nirdesh Katiwada focused on reducing embodied carbon, and Er. Rohit Joshi addressed electric vehicle (EV) strategy. Er. Shiv Narayan Kunwar spoke about machine learning applications, and Er. Sujan Sapkota presented his research on glacier lake outburst studies.

The award ceremony began with a welcome note by SONEUK General Secretary Er. Manoj Pun. Dr Surya Nath Ghimire highlighted the purpose and objectives of the competition, emphasising its importance in fostering academic and professional growth among young engineers.
Chief judge Dr Hom Nath Dhakal then announced the winners. First place was awarded to Er. Krishna Kandel, while the runner-up was Er. Sujan Sapkota. Both winners received cash prizes and certificates, which were presented by His Excellency Mr Chandra Kumar Ghimire, Ambassador of Nepal to the UK.
While distributing the certificates of participation, Ambassador Ghimire congratulated all the engineers and praised SONEUK’s initiative. He emphasised the significance of such events in nurturing engineering talent and highlighted the importance of soft skills in achieving professional success.

In his vote of thanks, SONEUK Chairperson Er. Subodh Timilsina expressed his appreciation to Ambassador Ghimire for his support and kind words of encouragement. He also thanked the panel of judges for their dedication and support. In his closing remarks, Er. Timilsina extended heartfelt gratitude to all contributors, participants, and winners. He affirmed that similar competitions would continue to be held in the future and expressed his hope that this event would establish itself as a flagship programme in the history of SONEUK.
