Lt Tejus Jung Thapa Becomes Nepali Army’s First Third-Generation Sandhurst Graduate

Family members, relatives, and friends congratulate Lt Tejus Jung Thapa after his graduation from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

London- On 18 July 2026, the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst celebrated the graduation of Commissioning Course Short (CCS) 262, marking the commissioning of 74 newly commissioned officers. Among them was Lieutenant Tejus Jung Thapa of the Nepali Army, who made history as the first third-generation Sandhurst graduate from the Nepali Army.

Expressing his pride, Lt Thapa said, ‘I am deeply honored to follow in the footsteps of my father and grandfather, who have been my guides and sources of inspiration. Their legacy has made me even prouder of my profession’.

Both his father and grandfather were present at the graduation ceremony held on Saturday, making the occasion especially significant for the family.

Lt Thapa’s lineage is deeply rooted in military tradition. His paternal grandfather, Brigadier General Tejendra Jung Thapa (Retd.), and his maternal grandfather, the late Lieutenant Colonel Prabala SJB Rana, were coursemates at Sandhurst from 1960 to 1962. Their shared experience at the academy established a strong foundation of military excellence within the family.

The legacy was further strengthened by Lt Thapa’s father, Major General Anup Jung Thapa, who underwent training at Sandhurst from 1990 to 1991. This rare three-generation connection highlights not only the family’s enduring commitment to military service but also the longstanding and close relationship between the Nepali Army and the British Army.

Adding historical significance to the family’s association with Sandhurst, King Mahendra and Queen Ratna attended Brig Gen Tejendra Jung Thapa’s graduation ceremony, while Queen Elizabeth II visited Sandhurst during Maj Gen Anup Jung Thapa’s training period.

The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading institutions for officer training, attracting future military leaders from across the globe. Nepal has been sending officer cadets to Sandhurst since 1952, initially at a rate of approximately two cadets per year.

The Nepali Army’s presence at the academy continues to grow, with two additional Nepali officers scheduled to be commissioned in August and December 2026.

Over the decades, Nepali Army officers have earned a distinguished reputation at Sandhurst for their discipline, leadership, and academic excellence, consistently earning the respect and admiration of both instructors and fellow cadets.
